A Wee Tutorial

Trying to explain how-to is not my strong suit so hopefully this will all make some sense.

You'll need fabric for the body, face and bottom. Weighted filler and stuffing. Embroidery floss and trim. Print out the pattern. It's on a 1" grid.

(Note on seam allowances. Your seam allowance will change depending on how big the trim you use is and how much of it you want it to show. How the base will fit onto the body will be determined on how big the seam allowance is. Sometimes the base and bottom with line up exactly, more often the base will be larger. This should make sense once you get going. If in doubt, just fudge it. That's how I get them done.)

Pin the trim to the inner edge of the right side of one of the three sides.

Sew trim to side leaving as much of the trim to show as you'd like. (see note above on seam allowances)

Do the same with the trim on the other side.

Pin another third to side with trim and sew just inside the existing stitching.

Do same to the last third.

Sew up the last 2 sides leaving a gap for stuffing.

Pin the bottom and sew. (see note above on seam allowances)

Fill the bottom with weighted something. I used the fancy plastic pellets this time but the lentils I used on the others are actually heavier and worked just as well and are cheaper.

Stuff.

Blindstitch the gap together.

Applique face on front. This can be done before assembling if you like. I think there are many different ways to applique, this is how I do it. Sew about 1/4" in front edge and clip edges...

pin face to body, fold sides under as you go and sew down at stitching using a slipstitch and then when I'm done I remove the machine stitching.

Now you're ready to embellish. Some eyes and a mouth, some design around the face, a little blusher. And I like to name mine and embroider it all wonky on the butt.

Use as you please. Toddlers love them because they're weighted like bean bags. They'd make excellent paperweights, companions in the sewing room, pincushions? They're also good for letting out political frustration. Even if you don't agree with my sentiment you have to admit that was an excellent shot! Throwing with my left while holding the camera in my right. I even missed the other guy. (Of course I was throwing things at the tv for about 10 minutes before I finally got the shot.)
