all my japanese craft books and their isbn's

I thought it might be fun and, maybe helpful to some, to show and tell all my japanese craft books and their ISBN numbers. I just discovered (thanks Cindy!) that you can order many of these books through YesAsia.com. The interface is in English, the checkout is super easy and they have FREE shipping for orders over $39. Score! So if you don't have Kinokuniya or Mitsuwa nearby you can still get in on the japanese crafty goodness.

It's so much cheaper to get these books on YesAsia than Kitty's on ebay. And it's fun to do the sleuthing.. for example I thought this book on Kitty's looked cool. So I discovered if there is any English on the cover at all it's not that hard to find on Amazon.jp. A search for "cotton paint" led me right to it. Then with the ISBN I found it over on YesAsia.. $11.43!! It sold for $31 plus $14.30 shipping on Kitty's. Of course then I forgot to order it when I put in my YesAsia order. duh. Oh, and I should mention - this is my first time ordering with them. But I've heard good things.

So here are the ones I have

My beloved Patchwork book...457911020X

Patchwork

cute little stuffie book Myra sent me...483476348X. Sadly they don't seem to have this one at YesAsia but do over at Amazon.jp, here.

Petiteboutique

cross-stitch book I got for Christmas...4277370055

Crossstitch

new style of sashiko...4277341063

Newstyleofsashiko

Stuffed Toys Easy to Make - this is where I got the scottie dog pattern...4834719227, not on yesasia but on amazon.jp here

Stuffedtoyseasy

Anytime, Anywhere Teddy Bear, another Christmas present :) ... 4579107616 only on Amazon.jp

Anytimeanywhere

Flower Accessory - my first Japanese craft book that my sweet Mom bought me from Kitty's...4277462618

Floweraccessory

Sashiko Zakka...4277341071

Sashikozakka

Palm Sized Stuffies from Jen...4834722449

Palmsizedstuffies

Teddy Bear...427756108X

Teddybear

A quilting book of house patterns that I just bought (more on it later)...4529040984

Housequiltbook2

bag book...4529040011

Bagbook

Mascot Album...4277552056.. on amazon.jp here . And here are some pics from it over on Kitty's. This is the book with the puppy purse pattern.

Mascotalbum

So if anyone else out there want to share their ISBNs too that'd be super cool. Subvert the system man!

You're an angel. Thank you SO much!

I hope your new order arrives soon!

Go, Hillary! I choked every time I saw what those books went for on Kitty's. In general, I think book prices here are far better than in the U.S. for similar-looking books. Most of the excellent craft and quilting books are in the $10-$16 range. Awesome that you got free shipping. :-)

Excellent idea! I will do the same once I get my act together (which could take a while). I have looked at YesAsia before, but I haven't ordered anything ... yet!

you rock-thank you!

so-they all look cool-any favorites? any that were a bit disappointing-or just a one pattern wonder?

Posted by: amy k. | Apr 18, 2005 7:56:38 PM

Is there any english in these? Thank you

Posted by: Betty | Apr 18, 2005 7:58:17 PM

Hey, very generous for sharing! Thanks. I've bought from Kitty and she can be pricey.

The ISBN is 4-574-80287-1

I cannot thank you enough for this info! I would like to tell you (and everyone) that I also found an online coupon for $5 off a purchase of $30 or more, just enter code SFIAAFF2005 into the coupon code box at checkout! Thanks to you I was able to order (3) aranzi aronzo books for $40.00!!! That includes the $5 off and free shipping!! Thank you so much, do you mind if I post about this on my blog tomorrow (giving you credit of course!) The way I found the books I wanted was to open up several windows at once, one I had amazon.jp, one I had the aranzi aronzo website, and also the yesasia, for some reason I couldnt find the books when i searched aranzi aronzo, because they have it listed as aranji, but anyway i found lots without pics, so I clicked on the name, cut and pasted the USBN into amazon.jp which always had the photo, then looked for the matching photo on arazi aronzo website--where they had a description..So I could make sure I was ordering the correct books! Anyhow hope that makes sense!! Thanks for making my night!

Wow Hillary, thanks for the tip and for sharing all your Japanese books! I'll try and do the same on my blog tin a day or so. I have bought Japanese books and fabric in the past from Megumi whose eBay seller ID is: "meg_pomaikai" (really great service!)

Posted by: Sandra | Apr 19, 2005 2:18:39 AM

Yay - thanks so much. After putting myself on a craft stuff diet only yesterday I just spent $50 over at Yes Asia. Whoops!

Kudo's for letting it all out : )

Posted by: Cindy | Apr 19, 2005 9:19:39 AM

thanks for posting those!!! i once spent a week (literally - a few hours every day for a whole week) searching through amazon.jp looking for the "mascot album" just by finding things that seemed similar and checking that sort of "people who liked this book also bought these" link, and then matching up the kanji with the image of the cover. sheesh!

i'm very interested to see your post on the house-quilt patterns...

Thanks so much for sharing/enabling! I'm new to this particular addiction but the shipping from Korea, and the wait time, was killing me!

Whoah! Thank you for doing this, and thank you for the links, I had no idea there was an easy way to get my hands on the Japanese craftbooks I've been eyeing everywhere!

Betty - they're all in japanese, but with lots of diagrams.

Amy - nope, no disappointments, lots of good stuff. I don't think I could pick favorites. I love all my pretty books! I haven't made that many things out of them though. I'm much more into making my own patterns these days, but I have daydreams of a later-in-life self, retired maybe, crafting up a storm and making every single thing in these books. Maybe I'll have learned japanese by then!

Amy has some great books, one on bags and one on embroidery over on angrychicken
http://angrychicken.typepad.com/angry_chicken/2005/04/happy_book_2.html
and
http://angrychicken.typepad.com/angry_chicken/2005/04/great_find.html

Thanks Heidi for the head's up on the coupon! sweet!

Thanks Bellablue, Maitreya & Heatherica for sharing :)

Thanks Sandra for the ebay tip - she has some beautiful kimono fabrics up for sale.

You are a total craft goddess for sharing this. I've been so frustrated recently trying to get hold of some these wonderful books and was thinking there MUST be a way. Well, you've showed us all.

Thanks Hillary! What a great idea to share this... Between Yes Asia and Crescent-Shop, we should be able to get most anything from Japan! How dangerous is that?!? I'll try to get my Japanese craft books up too - I've got quite a few.

HI Hillary!
Greetings from Amyville, I have been lurking for way too long... I am just a huge fan of your blog and all your crafty-goodness. The ISBN sharing is a fab idea, and you inspired me to post my books as well- you can find them on my blog:

Even though I never make bags from patterns, I find looking at Japanese craft books very inspirational, so I just had to go check out more photos at YesAsia and after an email with Amy from AngryChicken and seeing the photos online that I came across, I just had to swallow my craft diet pride and spend $50 on books. I can't wait for them to show up. Woo hoo! Thanks, Hillary. You're such a wonderful dear.

With amazon.co.jp you just find the search box and enter the ISBN. Then find the Add to Cart button.

Hello,

I just started to get interrested by japanese craft books, I just bought 11 books on amazon and I just wanted to know if you think it's the cheapest way to find good books.
My sister said to me that with amazon.co.jp, we don't have to pay shipping costs, but I paid 6000 Yen...
Is it normal, or is there any other ways to pay less or no shipping fees???
And other question, Do you use sewing machine to do your puppies and other stuff or do you do it by hand??? Or both...
I know it seems to be crazy to ask you all these question, but I just started a new "art", and, I don't know anything about it...
Well, whatever, i wish you a very good, and i thank you for answering to these quite stupids enormous questions...

I'm in Toronto and have been hoping for some of those amazing Japanese craftbooks, but when I calculated the shipping in, gave up the idea. Now I just orderd too many books... (grin). BTW, I also let Amy of Knitty.com know about the shipping sale from yesasia.com I hope you don't mind.

Hi Hilary - I have just ordered my first lot of Japanese craft magazines from yesasia - the cheapest way to buy them from Australia. No one seems to have them here - I own a retail craft book shop and none of my supplier can access them - I asked yesasia for a whole sale account but they only offer a 10% discount if you want to order over $1000.00US - I don't think my old patchwork ladies would appreciate the potential of these mags - so I will just have to order for myself and share any pics you may not have on my weblog. I have just published my weblog yesterday, I am a first timer, so I would appreciate any comments you have. Cheers Tania - for Oz

Posted by: Tania | Apr 25, 2007 3:59:29 AM

Thank you for sharing your fun Japanese books Hilary - I didn't get to read all of the comments but was wondering: for someone who doesn't read Japanese, could I still follow the instructions in these books if I were to get one? The crafts look like so much fun!

Thanks,
Jen

I have recently discovered Japanese patterns, btw, I live in Okinawa, Japan. I bought a few patterns the other day but have not tried them so far. In a pinch I should be able to find a nice soul to help me translate them.
