I'm a sucker for the long tail

I wish I could have gone to Copenhagen to hear this presentation Craftblogging – A window into the Long Tail of Fashion? by  Ulla-Maaria Mutanen

Here's a summary of the presentation from Boing Boing

1. People get satisfaction for being able to create/craft things because they can see themselves in the objects they make. This is not possible in purchased products.

2. The things that people have made themselves have magic powers. They have hidden meanings that other people can’t see.

3. The things people make they usually want to keep and update. Crafting is not against consumption. It is against throwing things away.

4. People seek recognition for the things they have made. Primarily it comes from their friends and family. This manifests as an economy of gifts.

5. People who believe they are producing genuinely cool things seek broader exposure for their products. This creates opportunities for alternative publishing channels.

6. Work inspires work. Seeing what other people have made generates new ideas and designs.

What a great find. All of these ideas ring true with me. #6 is so true. Seeing what you've got cookin day in and day out is always inspiring. I can't wait to get back home and back to my site.

Brilliant link. I particularly love the idea of the magic powers of hand-crafted objects. That's what makes reading great craft blogs like yours so compulsive!

I didn't know this weblog. Ulla sums it up brilliantly. Added to my favorites - thanks :)

wow-great post. #2 is my favorite-and #6 is so true. I think the main thing for me is that it's so rare to have all one's freinds and family "get" what you are doing all the time-where with the blog, everyone gets it. You don't have to explain why you spent 10 hours last week sewing an apron with a matching stuffed animal-ya know? It's all support, no judgement.

Thanks for sharing this summary.

The things I make totally have magic powers. SHAZAAM!

#6 is so true. For me the internet (and your site especially) has become an endless source of information and inspiration. None of my friends are into design or crafting so it feels good to see I'm not alone out there...

Thanks so much for sharing this Hillary! I love all 6 points and what Amy says is so true. Once when I was updating my blog a friend asked what I was doing, after I showed her the site and explained a bit about blogging, her only reply was, "why?". It's nice to be able to share with people who do get it.

I agree with all of those! Just looking at everything y'all can sew I wish I had an ounce of that! But I'll have to stick to my brushes and paint for now...

thanks for posting this. It rings true and makes sense out of what I've seen and experienced in the craft blogs.

thanks also for posting all your lovely things. I'm a regular visitor even if I don't say much. I love the sheep on your apron above!

Objects people make do have magical powers! It's so true and so nice to hear someone say so. Whenever I make a new puppet, it sings a song. I can't bear to think of somebody sort of--abusing a puppet --or anything else I make. It's like when you're a kid and you think your stuffed animals' feelings will be hurt if you aren't nice to them. There's something to it. There's magic in things we care about.
