Angela Moll's Secret Diary quilts

Secret_diary_2sml

I keep going back to visit these beautiful Secret Diary quilts of Angela Moll's. I discovered these from Jan's post about Quilt National. The more I look at these quilts the more reasons I find to love them. First it was the colors and composition. I love the mustard yellows and that great grayish blue. And I love how some of the quilts are pieced together to look like open books. Also I'm super intrigued by the technique. I've been wanting for quite some time to figure out how to print images onto fabric for use in quilts. Then there's the concept behind them...

"Each quilt is an open notebook, the oversized text extending an invitation to read. Yet the stitched diaries prove to be unreadable, revealing just the outline of a life story: rhythm and pattern, lines and layers. The pressure, intensity, and speed of the hand written line imply the texture of emotions. It is an open book but a Secret Diary."

I had such a revelation when I read that. I feel like this is what I do here with my journal. I send out little bits of myself, clues as to who I am as a person, but overall it's still illegible. This must be why, after writing a post, I always delete at least half of what I've written.

So anyway, back to the technique: the stars of a certain project seem to be aligned, I've got the Bubble Jet Set and Rinse, the freezer paper, ideas for a Christmas quilt using images from one of my favorite childrens books and a theme - Loobylu's "personal challenge" to (hopefully) motivate me to get started on it.

How you do find all these wonderful sites?? I recently attended ArtFiberFest in Washington -- many journal artists with love of sewing/fibers. What a wonderful way they come together here!

p.s. For great instructional on methods and tips to transfer to fabric (using photos, transparencies, etc.) see Lesley Riley's "Quilted Memories" book published earlier this year.

This quilt is so beautiful and inspirational! Thanks for posting it. I've had a lot of luck with the "Printed Treasures" inkjet fabric if you don't want to muck about with the Bubble Jet Set.

Wow, gorgeous quilts. It would be wonderful to snuggle up under all of those words! The image you have posted reminds me of the work of Sabrina Ward Harrison (http://www.sabrinawardharrison.com/).

I tried an experiment with a bunch of the image transfer methods I've found out there. Bubble Jet is a new one to me though. Here's what I found: http://www.sassygoat.com/blog/?p=31

What a wonderful quilt! I love how it tells all these stories without really telling them. Your blog is so inspiring, whether it's you making all this nice stuff, or you linking to someone else's work. :-)
