child labor

hey look, oscar can draw robots! I didn't even know he could draw faces. I'm feeling like the mother of the year over here accepting my award for attentiveness but I swear he just pulled this new skill out of his ear. tim was surprised too. he'd just been coloring same as normal and then bam, robots! so exciting! I put him to work straight away on some thank you cards.

It's amazing the things kids come up with. I'm working on embroidering some of my niece's renditions of Angelina Ballerina.

Yay Oscar!

My son also did that. Just all of a sudden he was drawing people and all sorts of clothes and food. It's amazing. It's like a big surprise to see what he draws.

well done Oscar! we were also impressed that he can write his name as well!

way cute! Robots are very popular with the boys! We found some fun ones in Target for Xmas that walk and talk and they were only $10.00 what a buy.
My oldest boy is super creative too check out the game he made out of the blue on my blog, I know these things rub off but where do they come up with the stuff?

The one in the foreground looks like he just had lunch and has a belly full of warm yummy soup!

I'm thinking all those robots he made for his birthday subconsciously were burned into his memory!! And he probably will have his parents' talent!!! Just wait til they draw something that is better than you! I just had that happen...mind blowing!

Hillary and Tim, are you surprised that your son can draw robots??? That is no wonder with such creative parents ;) BUT do you have enough storage place in your house? Because I already have 10 boxes full of my children's drawings, I can't throw it away, not a single one...

Posted by: hilde | Jan 8, 2008 5:11:54 PM

what a great series!!

Posted by: charlotte | Jan 8, 2008 5:44:19 PM

So cool! I used to always draw cards for my mom when I was little. She was good at putting us to work : )

Hi Hillary,
I have enjoyed reading your blog for the past few months and have even ordered and made a big footed bunny (with two dresses!). Anyway, after reading about your son's interest in robots, I thought you should check out some new trim at Superbuzzy - robots! http://www.superbuzzy.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=2238

I've been reading your blog for just a little while and I'm really enjoying it! My daughter did just the same as Oscar. She's now a bit over four and a few months ago she suddenly started to draw people with faces, curly hair, umbrellas, houses with lots of details etc. It's been so much fun seeing all the things she draws. I loved the robots!

Oh, and I've had my daughter make our family's Christmas cards since she was a year old... :)

Posted by: mamae | Jan 8, 2008 8:47:04 PM

wow... very impressive!

Aw, so darn adorable. My little guy did the same thing - colors and letters and then wham - awesome pictures. He makes me flowers all the time to hang in my room. I bought him a new Ed Emberley book for Christmas and now we get pictures of very detailed, super long trains!

I wish I could see it, but for some reason my monitor won't show your creative genius's work. :(

I have enjoyed reading some of your other posts, though!

Adorable! I love kid's artwork.

What a clever child! I also think it's quite clever of you to use his newly acquired skill to make thank-you cards.

So cute!

I read all the comments, and what I think is that I should stop fretting over my almost three year old showing NO INTEREST in coloring. Maybe his perfectionist ways will subside when he realizes he can do it. I hope.

Kids are amazing like that -- one minute you are sure they can't do something, then suddenly they can. Great pictures of robots -- and a great way to use them as thank you notes.

Posted by: Angela | Jan 9, 2008 10:37:30 AM

these are the best thank you notes ever! what a talented guy that oscar is.

Do I feel a new stitchette coming out of these...

I posted a pic of our Spaceboy on my blog. It only took us a year to finally make it! You'll be happy to know that my seven yr. old picked out all the fabric and sewed at least 60% of it. He loves his Spaceboy. thank you. We also did the robot which I will post tomorrow. Thank you for creating a pattern that appeals to boys. It is the perfect huggable size.

It is funny how drawing happens like that for a lot of kids-overnight! I was a pre-school teacher and saw it happen may times! It is fascinating!

Posted by: Carrie | Jan 9, 2008 12:30:18 PM

I love robots. Thanks for sharing.

OMG! Those are so charming. =) If Oscar decides to start selling his work, I'm interested.

Posted by: Steph | Jan 9, 2008 5:29:38 PM

That's awesome!! It's always great to have kids around to put to work. ;)

Posted by: Heather | Jan 10, 2008 11:19:06 AM

OMG! They're not just robots- they're EXPRESSIVE robots! Oh how I love them!
