choking hazards

Ok, yes making Phoebe clothes is addictive but what about barrettes! No one prepared me for barrette fever. I'd been resisting because honestly I've been waiting for and expecting her hair to all fall out any day but here we are at almost 7 months and it's still here, yippee! And almost in her eyes (not really) so these barrettes are a necessity (nope) and that totally outweighs the fact that if one falls out of her hair into her lap it'll be in her mouth in 2 seconds flat (I watch her really carefully). So Santa left her some cutie Haba barrettes and Mom had to add to her collection with these...clockwise from top: her name machine stitched into wool felt and slid over a clip, my shoddy version of these super cute barrettes I spied at tiny mcsmall made by little something, a felt bead glued into a felt flower and glued on a clip, an anchor button glued to a clip and a fabric covered button glued to a clip. If you're tiny and in my craft room you'd better watch out cause you're going to get glued to a clip.

And this is, I think, my favorite so far... made from selvedge dots. I want to make an army of these! I couldn't help but put up the Phoebe shot but there's a better shot of the barrette over here.

I promise (Katie!), I'm being super careful about her not choking on these. Every time I leave the room or put her in the carseat or down for a napper I take the barrette out of her hair and stash it somewhere, most often in my hair, which is how I end up at the dentist looking like this.

Reminded me a bit of this funny mom story.

How sweet! I have been saving bits of selvage, and am so happy to see I'm not the only one with crafty intentions for it.

Posted by: Annika | Jan 9, 2008 2:35:52 PM

amazing. i knew i saved selvedges for a reason!

ps: i think that's the first photo of you i've ever seen. nice 'do!

My friend's sister is little something! My worlds are colliding. :)

Excellent use of selvedge dots.

So cute! If you're having a problem with the barrettes sliding out (that baby hair can be slick!) a little bit of velvet ribbon glued to one of the inner faces makes a world o'difference.

I wish my daughter would keep them in her hair but as soon as I put one in her hair she takes it out and hands it back to me. 18 month olds dont get how dang cute they are with clips in their hair!

Posted by: Stefanie | Jan 9, 2008 2:54:28 PM

She's such a pretty babe, Hillary! My girls were born w/ tons o' hair too. Clips are so fun, aren't they?

Posted by: Leslie | Jan 9, 2008 2:57:10 PM

Very sweet clips. Fun stories too!

Posted by: Tia Curtis | Jan 9, 2008 3:08:50 PM

so sweet
will be making some of these soon enough for the little girl due next month perhaps in the fall

may i ask what type of machine you use to be able to sew names or can you do that with any free arm.
love the shots of you and phoebe too

Posted by: Nancy | Jan 9, 2008 3:19:59 PM

That may be the best use for selvage dots I have ever seen. I may have to make some of those for myself!

Posted by: Amy Hodge | Jan 9, 2008 3:28:57 PM

super cute! the ones a made a bit back are all lost now. :(

and the teeny tiny clear rubberbands don't come out-in case you get sick of losing these, and a warning, our neighbor (who was 2 at the time) went to the ER with one of these metal clips in her tummy! yikes!

we do both around here, clips and rubberbands-of course liddy is bald!

I am so so glad you have a girl! Your ideas are so inspiring! I love the dotty clip! My baby girl has lots of hair and wears a barrette almost every day, she is so used to wearing them she forgets they are there and keeps them in.

Posted by: Roseanne | Jan 9, 2008 4:13:54 PM

I've often thought of making these and now I'm inclined to. They are so cute and Phoebe is adorable!

Posted by: Dawn | Jan 9, 2008 6:16:46 PM

OMG, Phoebe is so super cute (so are the barrettes, I especially love the "Phoebe" one)... I love your pic with all the barrettes in your hair. One time I showed up to my daughter's art class with a big piece of string cheese stuck in the barrette that was holding up my hair... that's what I get for putting my hair up while taking the unwanted cheese stick from the kids in the backseat while driving to class.

So, nice to see I'm not the only mom who goes out in public with twenty barrettes in their hair!

Posted by: Rachel | Jan 9, 2008 7:42:40 PM

That's the trick, get her used to them early! Maggie won't leave hers in her hair - she takes them out and hands them back to me, exactly as Stefanie described. Glad to know she's on track with the other 18-month-olds... I'll keep working on it, though, so Aunt Hillary can make her some new barrettes:).

Posted by: Katie | Jan 9, 2008 7:51:45 PM

These are adorable. Thank you for the ideas!

Posted by: Leigh | Jan 9, 2008 8:39:08 PM

I can't believe you made something so cool out of something I would have thrown in the trash. Apparently I lack vision.

That Phoebe just gets cuter and cuter.

Posted by: Jennifer | Jan 9, 2008 8:40:13 PM

Those are adorable. My baby girl's hair really does fall into her eyes, and I'm addicted to the search for cute barrettes. Unfortunately, if I don't watch her like a hawk, she does pull them out and try to eat them, so you're wise to be careful!

I think you inspired me to get out the glue gun.

Posted by: Ashley | Jan 9, 2008 9:23:43 PM

Very cute! I'm partial to babies with lots of hair. . . maybe because my 5 month old Lucy has a ton, too! These barrettes are darling! I may have to try something similar. . . I've just been hot-gluing little bows to the barrettes, but the buttons are such a good idea.

Posted by: juliann | Jan 9, 2008 9:43:14 PM

ah! we gave up on barettes for the time being. Astrid would get them out of her hair and into her mouth in no time. She got a haircut after that. It's a shame because she looks so darn cute with the barette in!

Posted by: charlotte | Jan 9, 2008 10:13:06 PM

See that's the thing about hair clips and bows. It sneaks up on you, and next thing you know they are taking up your husbands side of the drawer!! Have fun, they are addictive.

Oh, how cute! My sister made some sweet button barrettes for my 13 month old Aida, who immediately tears them out and tries to lick them. Sigh. I agree with others who said that it's good you are starting her early with the barrettes so she will just be used to it! Those moldable children, if you can capture that small window of time...

Posted by: lynne | Jan 9, 2008 11:25:18 PM

hey thanks everybody :) let's hear it for barrette fever!

nancy, I just dropped the feed dogs on my old crappy machine and had at it.

ashley, I'd be wary with the glue gun. I never have any luck with hot glued things staying put.

melanie, no way!

Posted by: hillary | Jan 10, 2008 8:55:15 AM

Oh my these clips came out nicely. Think of all the fun words you can come up with for them. I used to have braided ribbon barrette clips when I was younger. I am quite fond of barrette art!

Posted by: Betty | Jan 10, 2008 10:10:02 AM

Using the selvedge! I love it! and the Phoebe barrette is so cool!

Posted by: Carrie | Jan 10, 2008 10:12:16 AM

Cute cute cute!

The clippie kind you can always attach to your shirt. I have 2 girls and I often looked like I had some kind of strange brooch on (sometimes I still do). You can clip them to your neckline or the hem of your shirt, depending on the look you're going for! :)

Posted by: Lisa D. | Jan 10, 2008 10:21:06 AM

Ha!! We'll head the warning about your craft room!!;) These are awesome... how are you so good at stitching cursive letters like that?!!! And Phoebe has such big beautiful eyes! She definately needs to be able to flash those....it's a girl's secret weapon, ya know!

Posted by: bethany | Jan 10, 2008 11:22:38 AM

Those are so adorable! Now I am thinking I want to make myself a ton of cute barrettes!

Posted by: Heather | Jan 10, 2008 11:49:52 AM

For more inspiration, check out giddygiddy.com. I am in no way affiliated with them, but one look at their site had me placing a small order and making a run for the craft store!

Posted by: brandy | Jan 10, 2008 1:46:39 PM

What sweet barrettes, I can see why they'd be addicting to make!

Posted by: June | Jan 10, 2008 2:20:13 PM

so cute! and it's so wierd how ppl are making things at the same time... I just bought a ton of felt last week to cover barettes, and have already made one set with a fabric covered button that i've been rocking all week :)

Posted by: Nada | Jan 10, 2008 2:58:22 PM

Not only is barette fever addictive but it's contagious. I had it a little while ago and my girlfriend caught a nasty dose off me. We went crazy with covered buttons, Suffolk puffs, ribbons and Loctite glue. (maybe it was the glue fumes that caused the crazyness!)

Posted by: Amelia | Jan 10, 2008 5:21:22 PM

A Great way to keep barrettes in wee one's fine hair is to go to the $ store & buy that rubberized mesh stuff that you use on your shelves to keep glassware from chipping. Cut it into a sliver just big enough for the clip and attach it to the inside of the clips (alligator or snap clips) using E6000 glue. It gives it just the right amount of friction so baby doesn't pull it out. I LOVE the Phoebe barrette!

Posted by: Juli | Jan 10, 2008 8:12:55 PM

I love the one with her name. My little one won't keep them in her hair so it's good to train Phoebe now while she's young.
My funny mother story is grabbing the baby, the keys, the diaper bag and jumping in the car to realize I don't have any shoes on.

Posted by: Karissa | Jan 10, 2008 10:03:12 PM

Love those. That is such a great copy of the Tiny McSmall hair clips. I was just thinking about making some similar today!

Posted by: thelongthread | Jan 10, 2008 11:09:19 PM

Ohhh...I wouldn't mind getting glued to a clip if it meant getting to hang out in that adorable head of hair!! Really, you have the most adorable children!

Posted by: heather | Jan 11, 2008 2:33:12 AM

oh i love those

Posted by: Patty | Jan 11, 2008 9:39:20 AM

Very cute. If only my 18 month old had any hair.

Posted by: Ericka | Jan 11, 2008 12:20:52 PM

the "training her young" thing is a good idea but watch out! my mom had to wake up an hour early to do my hair and my sisters all the way until we were in high school. we became, ahem, particular about it. total meltdown with my father when she was out of town.

Posted by: lena | Jan 11, 2008 2:10:50 PM

I love selvage dots, and this is a great use of them! I must know how you machine-stitched Phoebe's name -- did you do it free-motion, or does your machine have that font on it?

Phoebe is really adorable, btw, and getting so big!

Posted by: Grace | Jan 11, 2008 6:45:30 PM

the clips are adorable! i love the phoebe clip. thanks for sharing.

Posted by: liz | Jan 13, 2008 9:49:31 AM

ooh, I know what you mean about clips. I went through the same thing with Mia. She was born with a ton of hair that never fell out. So fun! I still make clips (or now, "ponys") for her. And I found really cute ones at the Jack and Jane shop on Etsy. They make fabric covered stuff.

Posted by: rachel | Jan 13, 2008 10:05:53 AM

All the barrettes in your hair is so funny! And totally cute. I have a little collection of funny mom stories up my sleeve too. BTW, Happy Belated Birthday!

Posted by: Toni | Jan 15, 2008 10:57:15 AM

I'm a bit late to comment. But funny story. My husband sometimes lets my daughter play hair salon using him as her customer. After one such episode he went to target with probably six shiny hair clips in his hair. I had a good laugh when he walked in the door. He said he did get a few strange looks.
